The former first lady of Qatar, Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Misnad, was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September, addressing a 23 September session on education moderated by UN special envoy for global education, former British prime minister Gordon Brown. Sheikha Mozah bemoaned what she said was the neglect of attempts to achieve universal primary education. “Education has been forgotten and has been a policy orphan,” she said. “For the first time since the Millennium Development Goals were launched in 2000, Unesco reported an increase in the numbers of out-of-school children to 58 million.
