The National Assembly passed a law on 19 June putting in place new regulations for sports clubs and federations. The legislation opens yet another chapter in the saga of Al-Sabah faction fighting, focusing on efforts to undermine the power of Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, a nephew of Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and apparent aspirant to become the next crown prince. On the face of it, the changes are an effort to deal with international criticism of political interference in the sports system: in October 2015, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended Kuwait due to undue government interference.
