Qatar: Rights council

Qatar has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for a three-year term starting 1 January 2015. Annual elections to the council routinely attract criticism from human rights campaigners, who say the election of countries with poor domestic rights records is an outrage. Qatar’s election, in a 21 October vote, is no surprise, however; it served a previous term ending in 2013, and joins Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which were elected to the council in 2013 and 2012 respectively.
