Qatar: New TV station planned?

Issue 970 - 23 May 2014 | 2 minute read

There have been several reports in recent months that Doha plans to launch a new Arabic-language satellite television station, based in London, as a counterweight to Al Jazeera, whose perceived pro-Muslim Brotherhood bias has long angered Qatar’s neighbours. In March, Sharjah-based Al-Khaleej said the new station would be called Al Araby Al Jadeed (The New Arab), and would have an associated website in Beirut; intended by Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani to repair some of the damage Al Jazeera has inflicted on Qatar’s relations with Saudi Arabia and the UAE in particular, the network would be overseen by Azmi Bishara, a Palestinian who is currently the general director of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Doha.
