Qatar: Emir Tamim’s CNN interview

Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani gave an extended television interview to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on 25 September, his first since becoming emir. Recorded while he was in New York for the UN General Assembly, the 20-minute discussion covered a range of predictable topics, from Syria to the soccer World Cup, and dwelled for some time on accusations that Qatar has been funding terrorist organisations. Emir Tamim, who looked comfortable throughout, argued that in some instances Qatar simply disagreed with the West (and others) that certain organisations should be designated terrorist; he said that, while real extremists were well known, and never funded by Qatar, it would be a mistake to label Islamist groups extremist on the basis of political differences.
