Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani undertook a three-day official visit to Germany, beginning on 16 September. He met many senior officials, including, on 17 September, President Joachim Gauck, Chancellor Angela Merkel, vice-chancellor and minister of economy and energy Sigmar Gabriel and Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit, who accompanied him for a spot of sightseeing which included the Brandenburg Gate. The visit followed criticism of Qatar in August by development minister Gerd Mueller, who accused Doha of funding Islamic State militants.
