Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani had his first meeting with US President Barack Obama on 24 February, during what was also his first visit to the White House. The two men have previously crossed paths – Sheikh Tamim took part in a 25 September summit-level meeting on threats to international peace and security, held at United Nations headquarters, which Obama chaired – while his father, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa, had talks with Obama just two months before handing power to his son in June 2013 as well as in April 2011. But a White House spokesman told GSN that Obama and Tamim had never officially met, despite their mutual public emphasis on the strength of the bilateral relationship.
