In 2011, Bahrain plunged into political crisis, with mass protests demanding political change. Attempts to negotiate failed, and the uprising was brutally crushed; an independent report documented widespread human rights abuses. The government promised reform, but relatively little has been delivered. Smaller-scale protests, mostly led by the Shiite majority, continue, as do clashes with security forces, and tactics are increasingly aggressive.
