Seadrill has secured a contract with Total Upstream Nigeria Ltd worth $1.1bn over five years for the use of the newbuild ultra-deepwater drillship West Jupiter in the Egina offshore project on OML 130. The West Jupiter is one of eight sixth-generation drillships under construction for Seadrill, and is expected to be delivered from the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, in August. The rig will be outfitted to work in up to 3,000 metres of water and is capable of water depths up to 3,600 metres and drilling depths up to 11,400 metres. West Jupiter will join Seadrill’s West Capella, which has been operating in the Usan field offshore Nigeria since 2008.
