Nigeria: Government moves on nuclear power

Issue 303 - 26 Jun 2015 | 3 minute read

The Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) has said that two locations have been selected for nuclear power plants as part of preliminary site selection. NAEC chairman Erepamo Osaisai is reported to have told a plenary session forming part of the appraisal process for the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review in Abuja on 22 June that the sites will be evaluated once approval is granted by local governments. Preliminary licensing of the sites is expected by end-2016. Russia’s Rosatom, which is in talks with the government about developing up to four nuclear power plants, has previously confirmed that two sites have been selected, according to local media reports.
