Libyan power infrastructure targeted as civil conflict escalates

The willingness of the opposing sides in Libya’s renewed civil conflict to attack economic assets has put the nation’s electric power generation capacity under renewed stress. Parts of eastern Libya were without power for at least six consecutive days in early January. An aerial blockade of sea ports not under the control of the internationally recognised Tobruk-based government may also affect supplies of diesel to some power stations, meanwhile financial difficulties mean that a large proportion of the temporary generation capacity installed in 2013 is not operating.
