Kuwait: The Kharafis

Kuwait International Airport bidder Kharafi National (KN) forms the core business interest of the Kharafi Group, a large family conglomerate founded by Mohammed Al-Kharafi in 1956 which made its fortune from the Gulf construction boom in the 1970s. A founding member and long-running chair of National Bank of Kuwait, in which the Kharafi family retains a stake, the late Mohammed Al-Kharafi was a major player in Kuwaiti politics and business. Son Nasser Al-Kharafi subsequently ran the group until his death in 2011. Mohammed’s eldest son, Jassim Al-Kharafi, now chairs the group, along with his brothers Fawzi and Mohannad, after spending almost 13 years as National Assembly speaker.
