Kuwait: Power cut

Issue 987 - 19 Feb 2015 | 1 minute read

Kuwait was briefly plunged into darkness on 11 February, when a technical malfunction caused the entire electricity grid to shut down. According to the minister of water, electricity and public works Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim, a glitch (thought to be a cable failure) at the northern Al-Sabbiyya plant impeded the release of 2,000MW out of a total 5,700MW serving most of the country; the outage was a precautionary measure initiated to protect the whole network, and power which went off at about 7:20pm was back on everywhere three hours later. Qatari media said Kuwait took power from the Gulf Co-operation Council power grid. Oil installations were not affected by the blackout.
