King Salman: US Strategy

On 22 July, US defence secretary Ashton Carter arrived in Jeddah from Israel for talks with King Salman. In his first visit to the kingdom, Carter was expected to soothe Saudi upset over the nuclear deal with Iran. Carter said he aimed to discuss US strategy to counter Iranian aggression in the region as well as the fight against the Islamic State group. This is Carter’s first meeting with King Salman; he has met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim (in the US) and Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Sabah (in Kuwait).
