King Abdullah Bin Abdelaziz made two significant statements in August, in which he condemned the violence sweeping the region and warned that inaction against terrorism would see it reach Europe and then the United States within weeks. The first statement, published by state news agency SPA on 1 August, tried to distance the violence in the Islamic world from Islam, saying terrorists were distorting the religion. “I call on leaders and scholars of the Islamic nation to… stand in the face of those trying to hijack Islam and present it to the world as a religion of extremism, hatred and terrorism,” he said.
