US secretary of state John Kerry had a brief meeting with Gulf Co-operation Council foreign ministers on 5 March, ahead of talks with Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal. The bilateral Saudi-US talks were described by Saudi Arabia as “fruitful and constructive”; Kerry said he and Prince Saud had had “a very full day”, which included a meeting with King Salman (see Royals), and a “productive” lunch with Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef. One of the main reasons for Kerry’s visit was to brief and reassure the Saudis about nuclear negotiations with Iran.
