Kenya: PPAs signed for 76MW of new generation

Issue 307 - 11 Sep 2015 | 1 minute read

Kenya Power has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with two locally owned companies, Akiira Geothermal and Kleen Energy. Akiira will develop the 70MW Kajiado geothermal power plant and sell power to the utility at a price of 9.2c/kWh. The project is sited in the greater Olkaria geothermal area, 12km south of the existing Olkaria complex on a 120km2 prospect. Centum, an East African investment company backing Akiira, says the block has the potential to produce more than 140MW. Drilling is expected to begin this year.
