Kenya: Jersey court acts over historic corruption at KPLC

Issue 319 - 10 Mar 2016 | 3 minute read

The Royal Court of Jersey has confiscated £3.28m and $540,331 from Jersey-registered Windward Trading Ltd, which was owned by former Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) chief executive Samuel Gichuru, after Windward pleaded guilty to four counts of money laundering between 1999 and 2001. Court documents accuse 11 foreign contractors of making illicit payments to Windward to secure KPLC contracts, and Jersey is seeking the extradition of Gichuru and former energy minister Chrysanthus Okemo.
