Prime minister Haider Al-Abadi celebrated the recapture of Fallujah from Islamic State (IS or Daesh) fighters on 26 June. Speaking to national television while waving an Iraqi flag outside the predominantly Sunni city’s main hospital, Abadi looked forward to recapturing Mosul, the largest Iraqi city held by IS. “As we promised to raise the flag high in Fallujah, we will raise it in Mosul soon with the will of our heroes. I call on Iraqis to celebrate this day,” he said.
