National carrier Iran Air halted direct flights to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 21 June because the ageing Boeing 747 it used on the route had to be called in for maintenance, the official Islamic Republic News Agency (Irna) reported. The move highlights the dire need for Iranian airlines to finalise large orders for new planes. Reuters on 21 June reported that Boeing had “tentatively” agreed to sell up to 100 new planes to Iran in a deal worth up to $22bn.
