Ghana renewables schemes stack up but budget and grid capacity concerns persist

The late October sod-cutting ceremony in the south-eastern coastal town of Ada was another step forward for the much-hyped 1GW tidal scheme, announced in June by local permit and rights-holder TC Energy Ltd and Swedish investor and wave power technology supplier Seabased Group. Ghanaian authorities have talked excitedly about what could soon become the world’s largest tidal wave plant and the country’s largest single power generator, but experts are sceptical about the project, and there are wider questions about the grid’s ability to host big renewable energy (RE) schemes.
