In an interview early in February with the Abu Dhabi daily Al-lttihad, the Soviet ambassador to the UAE Felix Fedotov confidently predicted that relations between Moscow and Riyadh would soon be restored. All it needed, he claimed, was for the two countries to respect each other’s culture and traditions; then there would be no barrier to fruitful and lasting friendship. There is, of course, rather more to it than that – not least, the likely reaction of the United States to such a development at this point.
