Bahrain: Khawajas sentenced

A Bahraini court sentenced pro-democracy campaigner Zainab Al-Khawaja to 16 months in jail for insulting a government employee and damaging public property on 9 December, her lawyer said. She had already been sentenced to three years in prison on 4 December for tearing up a photo of King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, though that sentence was suspended pending appeal. Her lawyer, Mohammed Al-Wasati, was quoted by Reuters as saying that the 9 December sentence related to offences in 2012. Her sister Maryam Al-Khawaja was sentenced in absentia to one year in prison on 1 December for assaulting two police officers.
