The head of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) Nasser Al-Wahayshi has been killed in a US strike on Yemen, Al-Qaeda and the White House said on 16 June. Wahayshi had been leader of Al-Qaeda in Yemen since 2007 and had been seen as a successor to Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri, who named him the movement’s number two in 2013. Qassim Al-Raimi, who, like Wahayshi, was one of 23 men who escaped from Sanaa prison in 2006 and is a Zawahiri loyalist, has been named the new leader of AQAP.
