The Jordanian government’s furious diplomatic protests at Qatar’s failure to support the candidacy of Prince Zeid Bin Hussein for secretary general of the United Nations has once again highlighted the brittle complexity of the gas-rich emirate’s relationships with fellow Arab countries.Qatar’s paradoxical cultivation of radical connections alongside ostentatiously pro-Western positioning, not to mention its contacts with Israel, continue to unsettle more conservative regional neighbours.
