Among the many facets of President Vladimir Putin’s intervention, Russia’s dramatically increased support for the apparently beleaguered President Bashar Al-Assad changes the balance of power among Syria’s allies, led by Iran. This was underlined by foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif taking his place at the table in Vienna for talks on Syria as GSN went to press. Meanwhile, the Iranian death toll in Syria has been mounting, reaching a record high in October, when the deaths of four senior commanders were reported, including Abdollah Bagheri Niaraki, a former bodyguard of ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (see Defence and security).
