Two US officials who have been central to nuclear talks with Iran – deputy secretary of state William Burns and Jake Sullivan, vice-president Joe Biden’s national security adviser – will continue working on the Iran file, even though they are due to leave their positions. “Given their history working on this issue, particularly with the Iranians, I can confirm today that they will both remain involved in the Iran negotiations as special government employees after their departures from their respective positions,” state department spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters on 7 August.
