UAE sentences 69 in Al-Islah trial

The biggest political trial in the UAE’s history – the so-called UAE 94 trial of members of Islamist group Al-Islah accused of plotting to overthrow the government – came to a close on 2 July with the sentencing of 69 defendants. The Federal Supreme Court verdict, which may not be appealed, saw jail terms of between seven and 15 years handed out to a majority of those on trial, who have maintained their innocence. A scanned copy of the verdict sent to GSN said that 56 of the accused were sentenced to 10 years in prison plus three years probation.
